Bill, nice article. I see some of the details differently. ABMs can be defeated by just overwhelming them with warheads. Of course, after a first strike, maybe the "strikee" won't have enough strategic nuclear weapons left in functioning silos for a response to overwhelm defenses. Seems to me, the Americans are at a disadvantage in that none of the US land based strategic nukes are mobile but the Russians have plenty of mobile launchers. (But, would they work?)
Secondly, I don't see this as strictly an American hegemonic fight. I see it as a "World" Hegemony against sovereignty and nationalism. Russia will not surrender it's sovereignty. China won't either. Someone has to end up on top in the end. There's only three entities on the planet that have any chance of ending up on top: China, EU, and the US. I don't think it will be the US. An insane (delusional, suicidal, morally bankrupt) culture can't rule the world.

I would add to this encyclopedia "Harlot's Ghost" by Norman Mailer. It's a visceral portrayal of the insanity of "Cold War" thinking, how intelligence and the State Department create their own enemies.
There's also a book out there "With Enough Doors: Reagan's Reign of Error". The whole book is Reagan quotes, and the title comes from his idea that the US could win a first strike war if everyone made shelters by digging holes in their yards and covering them with the doors from their houses.
